Accident Injuries Are The Inevitable During The Summer

Lawnmower Injury Accident

Warm summer air lures people out of their homes for gardening, cookouts, motorsports, boating, bicycling and swimming. During the summer season, not only do the number of car accidents increase, but so do the number of other not-so-common injuries. Some people hurt themselves through their own negligence. Others are injured because of the negligence of somebody else. Part of the mission of any lawyer at Hirsch & Lyon Accident Law is to enhance the personal safety of you and your family by holding negligent people and businesses accountable for the injuries and deaths that they cause. Be aware of these simple safety reminders so that you and everybody who surrounds you can safely enjoy the summer season

Accidents in Your Own Backyard

Rollovers are the most common riding lawn mower accidents. The tighter turning riding mowers are particularly prone to rollovers. When a mower tips over, the blades could continue spinning, particularly if the accident occurs on an older riding mower that does not have updated safety features. If you are purchasing a new riding mower, be sure to familiarize yourself with all of its safety features. Most lawn mower accidents involve:

  • Burns
  • Severe lacerations
  • Amputations

Whether it is a riding mower or a mower that you walk behind, make sure that other people stay a safe distance from its discharge.

BBQ Cookout Accidents

Both gas and charcoal grills create dangers. Most people use propane grills. Make sure that the hose connecting the propane tank to the grill is not brittle or cracked. When lighting a gas grill, keep the top open to avoid a flash of flame. Connections must be secure too. Grease should be periodically cleaned from the grill to avoid fires. If you are using a charcoal grill, be patient, and allow the coals ample time to heat up. Putting an accelerant, like gasoline, on a single hot coal be extremely dangerous. Make sure that you position your grill at least 10 feet away from anything that might be combustible.

Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcyclists are quite vulnerable to serious injuries or death as a result of an accident. There is no metal protective barrier around them, and riders have no air bags or seat belts to cushion or restrain them. When a motorcycle accident involves another vehicle, it is most frequently in an intersection when another motorist fails to yield the right-of-way and turns left in front of the motorcycle. Most of those motorists say that they either never saw the motorcycle, or it was too late once they saw it. That is because a motorcycle presents a much smaller profile in traffic. When a left turn accident like that occurs, the motorcyclist has about two seconds to take evasive action. The most serious injuries in motorcycle accidents involve the head and chest. A full facial helmet can significantly reduce the chances of a serious head injury. Other common motorcycle accident injuries include:

  • Spinal, rib, shoulder, arm, hand, hip, leg and foot fractures
  • Torn cartilage, ligaments and tendons
  • Internal organ damage
  • Severe road rash

Boating Accidents

Like all other forms of transportation, anybody operating a watercraft is required to follow strict safety rules. Just some of those rules involve who has the right-of-way, no wake zones, overtaking other boats and operating a watercraft under the influence. Common causes of boating accidents include:

  • Operator distraction
  • Excessive speed
  • Sharp turns
  • Failing to properly ventilate the boat
  • Failing to yield the right-of-way

Bicycle Accidents

Like motorcyclists, bicyclists are very vulnerable to injuries from an accident too. A bicyclist is going to present an even lower profile than a motorcycle. An experienced bicycle accident attorney will see injuries from:

  • Motorists making both left and right turns in front of bicyclists
  • Bicyclists getting sideswiped by motorists
  • Bicyclists getting hit when motorists change lanes
  • Motorists opening doors into bicyclists

*Tip: Make sure that you and your family are protected by wearing a helmet when riding a bike.

Swimming Pool Accidents

Hot summer days in Arizona mean kids in swimming pools, but with kids and pools come the possibilities of accidental slip and fall injuries or drownings. Many pool accidents and near drownings result in oxygen deprivation that can result in significant long-term medical issues like memory loss, learning disabilities or neural impairments. Remember that drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children between the ages of one and four. Most of them drown in their own pool. One out of every five children who was involved in a near drowning incident suffers permanent neurological impairment. Have the attention of at least one adult focused on the pool at all times when the kids are in it.
